The lancet, also called amphioxus, is a free-swimming marine organism that bears a striking resemblance to the the ammocetes larva of the lamprey. Generally the lancet lives tucked into the sediment exposing only its mouth (Figure 1), which takes in water to filter through their pharyngial gillslits
Their larvae show typical chordate characteristics, but Subphylum Amphioxus is still used, however, as a convenient common name for all of the approximately 25 species in this diminutive subphylum. Four species of amphioxus are found in North American coastal waters. The genome of amphioxus includes AmphiNk2-2, the first gene of the NK2 homeobox class to be demonstrated in any invertebrate deuterostome. AmphiNk2-2 encodes a protein with a TN domain, homeodomain, and NK2-specific domain; on the basis of amino acid identities in these conserved regions, AmphiNk2-2 is a homolog of Drosophila vnd and vertebrate Nkx2–2. Lancelets (amphioxus) of the chordate subphylum Cephalochordata in the phylum Chordata are found in tropical and temperate oceans worldwide. Lancelet larvae, in particular, have played an important role in discussions considering the origin of the vertebrates from the invertebrates. They are the modern representatives of the subphylum Cephalochordata. Amphioxus, plural amphioxi, or amphioxuses, also called lancelet, any of certain members of the invertebrate subphylum Cephalochordata of the phylum Chordata. Amphioxi are small marine animals found widely in the coastal waters of the warmer parts of the world and less commonly in temperate waters.
The subphylum Cephalochordata comprises a single family Brachiostomatidae with two genera Branchiostoma (Costa, 1834) and Asymmetron (Andrews, 1893). Other genera as Epigonichthys is now synonym with Asymmetron and Amphioxides, once considered as member of the family Amphioxididae, now considered as giant larval individuals of the genus Asymmetron.
